Times Like These
Thoughts on sharing art while navigating uncertain times as an artist, with intention and honesty.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank
I’ll admit, I struggled to write this month’s newsletter. With so much going on in the world, I found myself wondering how my words would land during such tumultuous times and questioning what felt appropriate to share. If I remained silent, would it feel tone-deaf? If I spoke directly, would I invite division?
The truth is, I don’t feel called to share directly on everything happening right now with my work. Not because it doesn’t matter, but because I know the space I’m meant to hold, and I know my capacity to hold such spaces.
For me, it’s the space of tending to emotional wellbeing by creating art that invites joy, softness, beauty, and moments of connection into our everyday lives.
I believe this kind of care matters deeply in times of uncertainty.
As I’m sure you already know, there are many important ways to respond to injustice and harm. Some artists choose to speak directly, some create as they always have, and others move between both. There is no single right way.
But I do believe that whatever path you choose, it should feel honest to you.
So if you, too, were unsure how to share your art, you can start by simply sharing your humanness—be it loud, quiet, serious, gentle, humorous, or anything in between.
Because it may just be what someone needs to get through the day during times like these.
